We are a male and female couple who have one small dog. Because of the nature of our relationship, we are looking for roommates who have an understanding of BDSM dynamics or perhaps those who have been in a BDSM relationship themselves. Now about the neighborhood, house, and available rooms…

Neighborhood details:
• One block from the N-Judah line with easy transportation to/from downtown (40 minutes by train/15 minutes by car using Lincoln/Oak or Fell), many universities, and the beach
• Plenty of street parking available (unlike most of San Francisco)
• Three blocks from Golden Gate Park and all of its museums and gardens
• A short walk from local shopping and restaurant districts on Irving and Noriega
• Quick access to 19th Street and Sunset Boulevard for northern or southern commuting corridors

House details:
• This is a three-bedroom, split bathroom (sink/shower in one room and W.C. in the other) house with hardwood floors.
• The living room is large, well-lit, and has a modern décor. It is located adjacent to our bedroom at the front of the house. Comcast cable and wireless internet access are available to all roommates (with the added bonus of an in-house technical troubleshooter).
• A door separates our bedroom and the living room from the kitchen, bathrooms, and back bedrooms so there is a greater sense of privacy for all roommates.
• The kitchen is large and has a dishwasher and a gas stove.
• The garage on the first level of the house has some storage available, a clothes washer/dryer (no more Laundromats!), and our den/office.

Room details:
Each room rents for $900 but, if both rooms are rented by a single person, the rent would be $1,700 total.
• The master bedroom (room is unfurnished, furnishings in picture only for size reference) is 12’9” X 10’9”, has a 5’10” X 2’6” entry way, and two large closets. The first closet is 6’6” X 2’3”, has a cedar floor, is mirrored, and has both double and single hanging bars, shoe shelves, and upper storage shelves. The second closet is 3’1” X 3’10”, has single hanging bars and upper storage shelves. The room is on the West side of the house and gets lots of light through the windows, which have levolor blinds.
• The second room (10’7” X 10’8”) is next to the master bedroom, has a 3’6” X 2’7” entry way, and two large closets. The closets are mirrored, laid out in an L-shape, with double and single hanging bars and multiple upper storage shelves. The first closet is 6’6” X 2’3” and the second closet is 4’1” X 3’7”. This room is also on the West side of the house and gets a lot of light through its two windows, which have levolor blinds.

The fine print:
• First month’s rent and security deposit required to move in.
• Utilities are not included and are split between all roommates. Utilities include Comcast Cable/High Speed Internet, PG&E, Garbage, Water/Sewer.
• She will do all the major housecleaning every two weeks for an additional $40/month charge per room if you prefer not to do any cleaning.
• You may move in as soon as you’d like as the rooms are ready-to-go.

poly intimacy

Someone on another list recently asked for a description of how someone "who actively and openly participates in the Poly lifestyle" experiences intimacy.

My reply follows.

I don't participate in any "lifestyle". I simply live my life. There's no membership card nor administration council.

I also don't have "primaries" and "secondaries" as to me, that's too rigid, too linear, too much like exclusivity. The place I first heard that language, (primaries/secondaries), was from "Love Without Limits" by Deborah Anapol and her definition included sharing living space, money, children, etc, which I don't currently share with any of my partners. Her definition of primary doesn't include making primary an exclusive position but rather includes the possibility of a group household.

Me, I'm autistic. A group household would pretty much be my definition of hell, even if I loved everyone involved dearly. I need my time and space alone and apart to recharge. Group and social experiences are always challenging for me and are often far more like work than they are like fun. Experiences with one other person, occasionally two, work ok for me. The smaller the group, the more we know each other in context, the stronger our defined roles, the easier it is for me. While the idea of a poly family isn't totally out of the question for me, it's also not something I seek. Nor do I seek polyfidelity, (groups which exclusivity rules), nor N-way relationships, (triads, quads, etc). I'm simply me. I date. I have relationships. And the people I date also date other people and have other relationships. Sometimes we know the other people involved and sometimes we don't depending on a number of factors including geography, which communities we might share, who knew whom before relationships formed, individual strategies for dealing with jealousy/insecurity, etc. I tend to refer to my form of poly as "network" poly in the sense that I'm part of a network of relationships that extends pretty much infinitely in all directions.

Over the 20 years that I've been practicing poly, I've had a number of longer term relationships including one that's going on 10 years, and a half dozen or so in the 3 - 4 year range. Those are relationships that have been more or less consistent, where we meet, talk, play, etc, on at least a monthly basis, usually weekly. I also have more relationships than I can count which are more or less ongoing, but which aren't scheduled nor do they have any particular period. They're more like off and on relationships, or relationships that are slightly more distant. Some of the 3 - 4 year relationships have faded into the latter category and if we include the latter category, then I have probably another half dozen relationships that are in the 10 year old range. And if we add tantric lovers, or playmates, then the number of relationships expands again.

What I do with these people varies. Most are intimate friends and we talk and write and often share online forums where we do more of that. Some are lovers in the sexual sense. Some are SM playmates where we play at parties but don't generally have sex in particular. Others are social partners and we go out together and spend time in other communities, bdsm, swingers, tantra, or other special interest groups. A few have been or continue to be d/s partners in the sense that our relationship has at some time or another been based on a d/s dynamic.

Poly is, IME, easier than monogamy for a number of reasons. It's not easier in the sense of being emotionally easier - it's isn't emotionally easier. Emotionally it's possible to check out of a monogamous relationship for decades, even a life time and to live in that sort of absentee relationship indefinitely. I think that many long term monogamous relationships go through periods of that sort of absenteeism and that many simply check out after the first few years.

It's also possible to hold a monogamous d/s relationship together for at least a couple years based solely on romance, fantasy, and projection about who we think our partners are rather than who they really are. Poly doesn't prevent this, but it does make these sorts of fantasies significantly more difficult to maintain for any length of time unless everyone involved "drinks the kool-aid" and then what you end up with is something more akin to a cult than a family.

The trick to poly is exactly the same as the trick to SM. The skills in one directly transfer to the other. And yes, I'm making a clear distinction here between SM and d/s. While the two overlap, there are some significant distinctions and this is one of them. While it's possible to check out of an SM scene too, experienced players don't let that happen without some clear context. We call that dissociation and a dissociated partner is not, at the time, expressing consent. What happens when one person has dissociated fades from mutually consensual into the gray area between mutually consensual and abuse/assault/rape.

In d/s, it's easy to believe that the gray areas are the point and to live entire relationships in the gray - this is exactly what happens in most domestic abuse situations. However, it's much more difficult to live in the gray area when the gray area physically hurts as with SM. Frontier exploration in consensual SM requires active concentration and clear intention. If either of those falter, the experience changes rapidly from one of wonder and ecstacy into one of horror and simple pain, (not that the two can' be mutual exclusive :).

The "trick" to SM is to learn to talk with your partner clearly - to express needs and desires, boundaries and limits, and to do so while playing as well as before and after play. That same skill, the ability to ask for what you need, be it reassurance, information, hand holding, and to state and defend your own limits is precisely the skill that is necessary to maintain and navigate poly relationships. Both SM and poly relationships are also supported by strong communities and by adopting some of the community values. For instance, both SM and poly require periodic self examination - harsh self examination which requires learning to come to terms with truth about yourself that you might rather never see. Doing so is a spiritual act and an ongoing process which is vital and necessary to the ongoing practice of either of these. People who balk, who can't look at themselves or who look at themselves but can't accept what they find tend to break relationships and cause "drama" in the community. Sometimes that's ok, that's part of what the community support network exists to support. But at the same time, it's necessary for everyone involved to appreciate the goal of self development and the evolution of self awareness that allows for greater intimacy.

Tantra, too, has these characteristics. However, with western tantra it's possible to become stalled in the process without necessarily causing grief for anyone else. In both poly and SM, there are other people involved who will demand one's growth. Failing to participate in such growth will often lead to losing relationships and/or community which can be a heavy blow indeed. That's often a considerable motivator. In contrast, d/s virtually requires that some elements of self remain hidden in order for the romance of d/s to continue to have that magic that people crave an adore.

Poly has been easier for me for a number of reasons. First, as with many autistic people, I greatly favor direct communications. I don't necessarily recognize hints nor do other people generally recognize my hints when I use them. Tantra, SM, and poly are all greatly improved by this sort of communications and the communities around them teach this. Romance, however, and the strains of d/s which are predicated on romance are all greatly damaged by this sort of direct communication. While tantra/SM/poly all teach that romance qualifies as fantasy play and that direct communications is the only way to increase true intimacy, the magic of romance, and of d/s based on romance, is based on some things, some key things, being specifically and intentionally out of conscious awareness.

For me that's very hard. While I do enjoy romance and fantasy, I also need to be able to talk about them and talk about them directly. I don't necessarily know what people will need to keep hidden so it needs to be socially acceptable for me to ask questions about things people deny. I'm going to do it anyway because I don't know when it will or won't be socially acceptable so I may as well find a social environment that values the fact that I do so. Tantra, SM, poly, and many paths of self development all value this trait of mine so working in those worlds becomes easier for me.

Similarly, I don't learn social rules or social behavior the way most people do. Rather, I need to have them spelled out directly and explicitly. I have training in NLP and hypnosis, so I've learned how to ask some of the questions in ways that are extremely subtle sometimes, but I still need explicit directions in many cases or I won't understand what social behavior is expected.

In poly and in SM, and to some degree, in tantra, what matters more than social behavior is how we behave with our partners. No where else in my life has it been more blatantly obvious that different people want different things and that no single formula will make everyone happy than in these areas. Also, no two people are alike. While the patterns, feelings and behavior all repeat, they don't repeat in the same ways from one person to the next. It has been easy for me to learn to ask my partner for what they want as the way for me to learn my interpersonal cues. It's obvious to me that my partner is the most authoritative source of that info and I can generally ask for as much detail as I need. Contrast with, say, d/s where people tend to bring preconceived notions about their roles into a d/s relationship and if their partner doesn't match their expectation, would often prefer to find a partner who did match than discuss the situation to adjust. As many d/s players have told me during potential SM negotiations, "If I have to talk about it, then it won't really be d/s. It won't have that magic - that romance."

Well, sure. But at the same time, I also have no idea what that person might want. They're suggesting that I mind read or that we might just "get lucky" and randomly happen to want the same things. However, I'm extremely weird. I'm not normal. And I promise you that it's extremely rare that someone else and I want the same things, although we frequently want compatible or complementary things.

Poly works the same way for me. I can talk to my partner about what they want, what I want, how we feel, what we would need in some situations, what has meaning and therefor needs to be tread carefully for one of us or another, or what doesn't, and therefor needs little or no caution around it. In the monogamous world, people frequently become offended by those questions. It's like the question of prenuptial agreements - is it simply prudent? or does it presage an expectation of failure to the relationship? Everyone is simply supposed to "just know" what qualifies as monogamy and what violates it. But frankly, anything "everyone knows", I don't know. The word for that "not knowing" is autism but nonetheless, I don't know.

Can I go to a movie with a female friend? Or would that be violating my monogamy agreement? Can I kiss her? What about oral sex? (Cause "everyone knows" and our president said that oral sex isnt' real sex.) What if I'm bisexual? Can I go to a movie with a male friend? Can I kiss him? If all of these things violate a monogamous agreement, then does that mean I simply have to stay home with my monogamous partner forever? And if my partner interprets my even asking these questions as tantamount to breaking up, then does that mean I simply have to risk my entire relationship each time? Or that I have to stay home and never do anything with anyone else?

I never did figure these things out when I was practicing monogamy. And while I'm practicing poly, I don't have to because discussing them is expected and nearly required, which is much easier for me.

Also, relationships don't come easy to me. They're hard to find because finding them means being social which is something which is considerably challenging for me. My relationships mean a lot to me and I'll bend considerably in order to retain one.

When I was practicing monogamy, I didn't even realize how far I could bend or was bending. I didn't notice when a relationship became so restricting that it wasn't fun, enjoyable, or supportive any more. I was particularly susceptible to all of the traps people fall into - where emotionality, even negative emotionality can stand in for intimacy, where mutual fear stands in for security, where security stands in for excitement, where excitement stands in for intimacy, etc. I simply had a difficult time evaluating any of my relationships because a) I didn't have anyone other than my partner to talk to about them, and these aren't questions for one's partner in general and b) I had no context against which to compare.

These days, I examine my relationships more frequently - poly has a way of forcing that to happen periodically whether you're up for it or not. I do compare my relationships. If one has a problem and another does not, then I look to the one which does not have the problem in order to find solutions. If several relationships all have a similar problem, that's a pretty good clue to me that there's something about myself I need to either come to terms with or change. Similarly if one of my partners has a similar problem in several of their relationships. Also, I have other relationship partners to talk to. If I'm having trouble in one relationship, who better to talk to about it aside from that partner than my other intimate partners - my friends, my lovers, the people who care about me and who are, albeit indirectly, affected by how that relationship is running?

In summary, poly isn't emotionally easier. It's hard. There's emotional and spiritual work involved. Like SM and tantra, you can't really be successful at it if you aren't willing to do that work. Although it works in reverse too - if you're willing to do that work, poly, tantra, and SM will help you locate the work to be done and will help you process it as well. IME, monogamy and d/s don't require that work. It's available to some degree if you and your partner both want to pursue it, but it's also anathema to the romance to a large degree.

I had no trouble sticking with one sexual partner when I was practicing monogamy. I never cheated. (Extreme honesty and integrity is another autistic trait). However, where I am now in my life, which includes interests in sex magic, SM, d/s, tantra, relationships, intimacy, ecstasy, shamanism, movies, computer games, entheogens, etc, I find it extremely difficult to find any single partner who is interested in all of those things as would be required by a commitment to monogamy. Poly simply makes more sense to me for my life at the moment and for the foreseeable future. It simply works for me and creates both more intimacy and more concrete spiritual paths through self development than monogamy ever did.

Spring 2009 Human Fox Hunt

Spring FOX HUNT is quickly approaching. Come hunt the fox, enjoy the
woods and animal role-play facility, and camp in a relaxed environment.
BDSM activities encouraged. Saturday morning begins the formal Fox Hunt
with a hunt cup, along with other fox hunt traditions. A full day of
hunting and play follows to end with a "Hunt Dinner" in the evening.
Participants are requested to bring food to share on Saturday night
after the hunt as we recount the day's hunts. Saturday is an open play
day. A pony play day and show is one of the many activities offered for
the day.

It's a full weekend of fun and frolic on a private ranch in Livermore,
CA. Camping available Friday through Sunday. It's $30 per person per day
or $40 for the weekend. Although the facility is rustic and participants
are responsible to pack in their supplies and pack it out, a modest
snack shop will be available this year with coffee and limited goodies.

Dominance and submission is a path, not a destination. It is an archetypal ideal that can be approached, but not perfectly attained. The embodiment of Dominance is about leadership, vision, integrity, accountability, responsibility, blessing, protecting, wisdom and more. The embodiment of submission is about service, devotion, surrender and more.

Like any mythic, heroic journey there is tumult, doubt, fear, betrayal, villains, thieves, and mystery to encounter along the way, as well as glory, love, joy, respect, healing, intimacy, connection, ecstasy and Eros.

Dominance and submission is also an inner journey. You will find everything within you that is unresolved about your Dominance or submission, will keep showing up. The tumult you experience externally on this path, reflects the tumult within your own psyche. There is no escaping the unfinished business of our pasts. Without a compass or foundation, it is easy to get lost or stuck along the way. With the right ones for you, this path can become one of learning, healing and expanding the sacred truth of who you are.

The workshop will be experiential as well as contextual. The workshop itself will be held as a ritual and participants will be learning about the process and tools of ritual as well as performing personal rituals to take them deeper into their desire and intention, as well as the conflicts within that may limit or hold them back in body, mind and soul....and many other aspects such as intention, getting present and embodiment.

Christmas Munch

Hi all,

As some of you already know, for the last four years I've done a "Christmas Munch" on Christmas Day for folks into bdsm/poly/etc. Well, I'm doing it again.

This year we'll be meeting at Sparky's Diner, 242 Church, about one-half block south of Market Street on the west side. (This is the same place that hosts the pony/animal role play munch.)

Sparky's is easily reachable by the Muni Light Rail Vehicle (LRV) line, and that is very easy to transfer to from BART at any of the Market Street BART stations if you're coming in from the East Bay. Plus, if it's cold and/or rainy, all of that can be done underground. Just take the LRV to the Church Street station and walk half a block south on Church St. (as in away from the Safeway).

We'll be gathering there at 1:00 p.m. and hanging out for a few hours. The plan, such as it be, will be to gather on the upper side of the restaurant near the front windows. Please feel free to join us.

If you're pretty sure that you're going to attend, please RSVP to me so I can give the staff a rough idea of how many to expect.

Come learn how to handle some of the most critical moments you will ever face. This is a "for real" class and attendees will receive OSHA-recognized certification good for two years.

The class is particularly recommended for dungeon monitors, party givers, club officers, professional dommes and subs, sex workers, burners, and others who may face increased risk of caring for sick or injured people. The class is primarily for BDSM people but BDSM-friendly people are also welcome.

Two First Aid/CPR classes in the East Bay

Hi all,

I'm putting on two First Aid/CPR classes in the next few weeks.

The first will be at Allen's Dungeon, 801 Loring Ave. in Crockett.

The second will be at Fantasy Makers in El Cerrito on Sunday, December 7th.

Both classes will run from 11:00 to 6:00.

Both of these classes are "for real" and those who successfully complete either will receive two-year certification recognized by OSHA (and the Dungeon Monitors Association) in both First Aid and Adult CPR. These classes are primarily for members of the BDSM community, and BDSM-related emergencies will receive special attention, but are is open to all adults who would feel comfortable being there.

Requested donation is $60.00 per person and nobody will be refused due to lack of funds. This covers workbooks, certificates, handouts, and special first aid supplies that the students get to keep.

I'm currently studying with Margot Anand toward a certification to teach Skydancing Tantra. This is a several years long course of study involving a number of one week workshops and some weekend workshops. As part of my coursework, I've been assigned to teach quite a few one and two day workshops specifically on Skydancing Tantra. Other than the fact that I'm teaching these and many of them are being held in local BDSM play spaces, these classes are not specifically BDSM related. Anyone who is interested is welcome.

Skydancing Tantra

The vast body of knowledge and practices developed by Margot Anand is called SkyDancing Tantra: The Path to Bliss. Margot, along with her certified SkyDancing teachers, have taught SkyDancing Tantra to tens of thousands of people worldwide, through nine international SkyDancing institutes.

The path of SkyDancing Tantra came to Margot as a revelation rather than a tradition. Yet the path of the SkyDancer goes back to ancient Tibet, when Yeshe Tsogyal, the enlightened consort of Buddha Padmasambhava, was called the "Great Skydancer." Together they developed Tantric Buddhism. "Skydancers" in the Buddhist tradition were people of great passion who were profoundly devoted to spiritual awakening. The path of the SkyDancer is a path of spiritual partnership between men and women as equal spiritual partners integrating ecstatic states into their daily lives.

Computer monitor tech question

Hi all,

Well, I joined Fetlife today and I'm certainly finding it interesting.

One thing that is bothering me is that my monitor seems to be acting strangely when I access many of their pages.

In particular, sometimes the lettering and images are quite sharp, and sometimes they start out that way but become "blurry" after about five to ten seconds. (This happens occasionally is some of my other programs as well.)

Any tech wizards got any advice?

First Responder Class

I'm once again offering a First Responder class.

Who: First Responders are trained personnel sent first to the scene of an emergency, particularly a medical emergency.

What: First Responders are formally trained and certified to an advanced level to work both individually and as part of a team in the assessment and stabilization of a wide variety of emergency situations, including medical, traumatic, and psychiatric emergencies. They are also trained in hazard control methods, rescue techniques, disaster management, and outdoor survival methods.

Where: The class will be held in the Fox Plaza building, on the corner of Polk and Market in San Francisco.

When: The class meets on Wednesday evenings from 7:00 to 10:00 from October 8th to December 17th, plus weekend skills sessions to be arranged.

Why: This class is especially sensitive to the needs of people in alternative communities such as BDSM practitioners , dungeon monitors, burners, rave staff, sex workers, and harm-reduction advocates.

How: The approximately 50-hour class will involve a variety of reading assignments, lectures, videos, guest speakers, skills practice sessions, and simulated emergencies.

Cost: Requested donation is $300.00 per person, plus cost of books and materials. Nobody turned away due to lack of funds.

Edges Volunteer Appreciation Party -- Needs some help

Edges will be holding our Big Volunteer Appreciation Party on Saturday, September 20, 2008 from 8:00 pm - whenever the party ends.

We are looking for some volunteers to help us out at the party.

We would love to have a couple of Body/Face painters. We have some paint, glitter, and brushes but if you have your own that is great also.

We would love to have a couple of massage therapists who could come and massage our volunteers tired muscles. We have a couple of tables that would work for you, but if you have a massage chair...that would be great also.

First Aid/CPR class Sunday, Sept. 7th at SF Citadel

I'll be teaching a First Aid/CPR class on Sunday, Sept. 7th from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the SF Citadel. Come learn how to handle some of the most critical moments you will ever face. This is a "for real" class and attendees will receive OSHA-recognized certification.

The class is particularly recommended for dungeon monitors, party givers, club officers, professional dommes and subs, and others who may face increased risk of caring for sick or injured people. It is also highly recommneded as a "warm-up" for those considering taking my upcoming First Responder class. The class is primarily for BDSM people but BDSM-friendly people are also welcome.

Requested donation is $60.00 per person. Nobody refused due to lack of funds.

Notes From Ali:

A large majority of building is done for the time being. However, we've got lots of little things piling up. Hanging mirrors, hanging other such items, painting door and wall trim, putting those in place, lots and lots of cleaning. We need someone super tall and with a super tall A frame ladder to put up the insulation in the med room (we couldn't fit the lift in). The garage door is KILLING me--it's hard to open and close and I need it fixed, though I'm pretty sure it's just the bottom line that's the problem. If someone with a truck can deliver a pallet jack for us that'd we super helpful. Lots more :-)

HUGS to our lighting goddess for giving us temporary lighting while we get all the electrical going. And applause for all of Steve V's hard work with Don and the electricians to give us permanent lighting!! They're due to start this week :-)

Keith is our new chair god. He'd been out of town, rode in and realized we were mid-move: suddenly Edges has our brand new beautiful chairs on their way to our butts.

YAY I am so excited to know that we'll all sit more comfortably and be able to put out pretty chairs in our fabulous new dungeon.

Someone saw me yelling at the garage door and said sweetly, "maybe you should put it on the list that you're in need darlin". So here I am!

A new garage door that actually rolls up onto itself, along with a walk-through door in it that opens outside (so we don't have to spend the money to redirect the current door that opens into the building and is in the concrete wall!). I believe Tom Wood is pricing out what's needed for that exactly, but it would make life at Edges much safer, simpler,
and give us more suspension and stage room!

I'm considering teaching another First Responder class

Hi all,

Well, it's been a while since the last one, so I'm once again strongly considering teaching another First Responder class aimed especially and the BDSM and poly communities.

As some of you know, this is a class in very advanced emergency medical care, typically taking at least 50 hours to complete. I've taught it several times before and the results have always been very gratifying.

At this time, it's looking like it would start in October sometime and meet one night a week running through December. Given that I'm often teaching out of town on weekends, I'm pondering having it on Wednesday nights. There would be a fee in the low three figures for taking this class, but I never turn anyone away due to lack of funds.

I stopped by the dungeon tonight...it is looking good...still has a ways to go...but it has come
so far and is going to be such a great space!!!

We still need more people to come out and help get it finished up.

Ali mentioned this evening that she would love a volunteer who could get several quotes for
covering the ceiling insulation. The space is about 4,000 sq. ft.

She mentioned that she saw a covering she liked at Sweet Tomato's the other night. (I think
she meant the one at Coleman and Taylor--Across from Renegades).

The new space is still in need of your help!!! It is looking amazing--all of the incredible people who have been giving of their time and energy are making a beautiful space.

So I've been away from my computer for nearly 5 days: I think that's a record. Wake up,
work, eat, crash has been the cycle. But guess what!? We are starting to come out of the
building phase and into the setup phase!! EXCITING.

This week we had super yummy food--Erin, I NEED that salad recipe--and Nikki NEEDS
that quiche recipe as well! Oh and our pizza rescuer, Alison, Mmmmm. Brownies and
homemade cookies from Jonathon yesterday kept us going. I'm sure I'm forgetting
something..likely something obvious too--sorry my head is so fried.

We knocked out a HUGE amount of work this week and are nearly ready to bring the lift
back for putting up suspension points, wiring in insulation, putting up wiring in the Vic
room, and more. We need those in the know with the bondage, and those willing to take
on heights! We will plan to have the lift on Tuesday and start with the smaller stuff and
get to the suspension points later in the week.

We are in need of strong chain by the way: if there's a chain god/dess out there anywhere
:-)

Everyone keeps asking the question: so has the place been cristioned yet? Yes, via
orgasm, play and hey...does anyone know if someone has actually fucked in the space yet?

And well, the dancing that ensues is great as well. If you've been by recently you have
most likely seen us dancing to the tunes and lamenting the loss of a stable point above for
the stripper pole. We could really using some help if someone wants to take on creating
either a base for the pole, or helping us find and putting in the pole in a stable place at
the space. Perhaps a concrete base can be put under the stage, a hole drilled through and
it connect?? I don't know. But we miss dancing and stripping on it!!

We cleared out the last big room and starting its painting--looking forward to putting in
the trim and such.

Have you all seen the 'Slammer'?? Stop by and try it out!! Shove someone or get shoved
into it. we've got lots and lots and LOTS of little things at this point. Shuffling things
about, hanging stuff, light painting, and tons of cleaning needed to start taking the dust
out!

Looking forward to another week. And some fun Monday night (from 7:00 pm - 9:00) with the first Women's Play
Lab "Head and Face play". Come by and see the new space, play, learn and share. I could

A Note from Ali regarding WISH LISTS:

So I've had several folks that cannot visit and share their time, offer Home
Depot or Lowe's gift cards and let me tell you--how helpful!!! And of
course, we always accept cash!

Did you know, it was over $10,000 just to get the keys to move in, much less
what it's taking to clean it out and create what's wanted--dry wall, tools,
supplies, mud, paint, flooring, etc. On that note: those volunteers that
have been super active in helping me keep this organized (whether from afar
or at the space) are the one's getting their suggestions in--so if you want
to see something at the space (I've heard "padded room"...puurrrr), then
help out, get involved, or solicit sponsors to pay for it so we can create
it!! :-) We want those things too, but they're costly and we need
supporters. If you're unable--think of folks or businesses that are able.

Many have asked, what is our "BIG wish list", meaning those things we sorta
need, but really just want, but would be really fabulous to have and folks
would immensely appreciate:

** New chairs, more seat room and easily stackable. We need a minimum of 50
really, but at this time budget is so tight that we may have to purchase a
few at a time. The local office furniture places are offering them only as
low as $32 each I've found, but online here they're $25 per!

A Note from Ali regarding STRAP-ON TOOL BELTS:

What a day, week, month! I'm at the new space early this morning for a
photo shoot in anticipation of the first events when we open for parties:
volunteer-only parties of course.

MOVING ON: This morning I'm wearing nothing but a tool belt and I hear the
owner of the tool belt walk in. Unbeknownst to him I've not only
commandeered his work tools, but I've also completely rearranged, shifted,
and adjusted his darling and loved tool belt. He's gonna be pissed! I run
and hide only to let out a long sign that it's someone else's voice. Vicki
and Jessica laugh at me to no end, insisting no one in their right mind
would be more concerned about readjusting their tool belt than my bare
breasts beneath its suspenders.. .I'm not so sure.

You see, I have come to know tool belts like my dearest and most favorite
strap-on. Really they're quite similar! Each is not vital, but immensely
useful when you have a task to complete and you want to do so with the ease
of knowing you have all of your "tools" in place. How would I feel to walk
in and see a sweet girl wearing my harness? Not a happy camper! Odd?
Perhaps. But I have reserve harnesses for friends in need (or perhaps
that's for when I'M in need--I get it confused) and I would not be thrilled
to know someone had adjusted it away from my measurements, and not even for
the purpose of pleasing me with said strap-on!!

Now: whose going to build the Mother of all harnesses? A
strap-on-tool- belt?! It holds your cock (whatever size, color, shape and
hardness you desire), your lube, condoms, gloves, rope, and of course a
handy loop for your anal hook!

So, if getting the dungeon open sooner doesn't make you come out and help...and volunteering earning you an invite to Ali's Volunteer Party--which could involve strap-on-tool-belts...then the fact that I will be bringing by toll house chocolate chip cookies and double chocolate chip and peanut butter cookies should get you there...because my cookies are the very best!!!!

What a week! We've had folks stopping by and pitching in every single day: be it to sweep, smile and leave, or to hang dry wall for hours on end. ALL of it is terribly helpful and really adds up quick. Please know that we need all of our members to give of what they are able.

As always, food is Mmmmmm, sugar is Mmmmmm! Thank you for the donations and well wishes. Anyone willing to provide Starbucks on tap?! Hahaaa

Thursday we were lucky to have the attention and energy of the South Bay TNG group. They canceled what is typically their movie night at Edges and instead we had lots of young energy sprawled all over the space: painting, mudding and more. What a great site to see our local 18-35 y/o group rally together and get their hands dirty with us.

Many of the same faces come in, getting off work early and stopping by, coming over on their lunch breaks, dropping off dinner for us on their way home, stopping by at the end of the day simply to help cleanup. And there are those that can only stop by once or twice. And let me tell you: both are vital to making this project come together!

We'll be doing more later day work this coming week!

** The contractor will be in to start creating walls: we're extending the
social area, creating some new doorways, and still have at least two walls
to demo. So bring strong arms with a sledge hammer, 2x4x8 stud material and
your tool belt, or cookies and milk.

** We will also be taking all of the recycling off from the old space and
some last tiny runs of 'stuff' if you have a pick-up truck.

** We will be strapping in new insulation as well and would be more than
THRILLED to have donations in that area!! And we need someone comfy on a
step ladder to get through drop ceiling and pull down fallen insulation.

person that is familiar with filling over dry wall holes!

** I really need someone that has a filtration mask to help dry vac up the
excess glass dust in the shed out back.

** Do you have a truck? We are in need of someone to load up all the packed
up rubbermaid bins and bring them over to the new space.

Not every person in this vault-like room with flames painted on the walls is participating
in the play area designed for torturous pleasure. Some sit and watch while others
await a willing partner for themselves. Voyeurs stand behind the fence watching
in arousal, indulging the participants.

They are the first patrons of the night, arriving at the door of the Power Exchange
Sex Club, a place where people engage in uninhibited fornication with consenting
members. It’s a place where people can come to role-play, dress in kinky clothing,
amuse themselves with eccentric toys, have non-conformist sex such as BDSM (bondage
and submission dominance and sadomasochism), or just observe. The Power Exchange
is one of the biggest, and first legal, sex clubs on the West Coast. Because the
club is highly secure and open to a variety of sexual practices, it is a haven for
the exhibitionist and definitely doesn’t accommodate conservatives who prefer intercourse
behind closed doors.

This is an essential Thursday night of pleasure for a group of twenty or so friends
and acquaintances who meet for their monthly gathering to play in erotic pleasures
after a night of dining. They avoid discussing their lives at home or their occupations;
their goal is simply to get together and have a night of fun, explains GARi “G-Shot,”
the initiator of this routine of munching and playing. The medium-built man wearing
all black elaborates on his idea of getting a group of sexually eager individuals
together by making an agreement with Mike Powers, the owner and founder of the club.

This particular crowd welcomes a diverse range of people who are nondiscriminatory
and accepting to all sexual orientations and all forms of play. BDSM, one of the
more popular activities, utilizes both dominant and submissive practices. The dominant
party usually takes control while the submissive appears helpless and endures painful
whippings and penetrations.

There are no limits with toys and play, as long as the members are consenting. It
is safe to say that nothing is astounding to people that frequent the club. Aaron
Ericson, manager of the Power Exchange, recalls an event from one of the Fetish
Balls—a themed monthly venue at the club that attracts a massive crowd and has been
deemed the busiest night of the month. During a particular Fetish Ball evening,
a lesbian couple joined a kinky-couple’s contest: “The girlfriend stuck her fist
up her girlfriend’s vagina thirty-six times,” Ericson laughs.

Power Exchange is a family-run operation and opened its doors in 1995 after the
legal debate of gay sex clubs and unsafe sex practices spurred in the 1980s. Michael
Powers, former mayoral candidate of SF and the founder of the club, relocated it
in 1998 from a smaller location on Harrison Street to the more spacious Otis Street
building. Visitors of the club must come inside with an open mind and a mature demeanor.
Even though the club is extremely liberal toward sexual desires and preferences,
it still adheres to a strict set of rules, and all drugs and alcohol are prohibited
inside.

“Respecting the visitors of the club is highly emphasized,” says Ericson. “We don’t
tolerate immature behavior.” The tattooed manager with a ring hugging his nose explains
that this business is just like any retail business and that customer satisfaction
is vital to keeping the club up and running. The friendly Ericson ensures the safety
of his guests, greets customers, and exchanges smiles and words with regulars. “Safe
sex and sanitation is very important,” Ericson says, pointing out the numerous baskets
of condoms, paper towels, gloves, and hand-sanitizers available in every room.

Joe Weigand, a sixty-three-year-old dominant, makes sure he does an extensive cleaning
after a scene in which he causes his submissive partner to have an orgasm with a
stainless steel dildo-like instrument, splashing vaginal fluids on the floor. With
latex gloves and sanitizing spray, he wipes the ground with paper towels when his
partner and he have finished.

Weigand is part of the closely-knit BDSM scene, which includes The Citadel, a BDSM
club that opened in 2003, and the Society of Janus, a non-profit organization created
in 1974. He is a volunteer at both the Citadel and SOJ and recalls being intrigued
by BDSM at the young age of twelve. “I had fantasies of tying up little girls and
had always had sick thoughts.” He adds that sex was oppressed in the fifties and
sixties and it wasn’t until the seventies that he met people from the underground
sex scene who were into kinkiness like he was. He used to be a frequent visitor
of the Power Exchange and attended by himself, but he admits now that he only comes
with a group about once a month.

Three floors dwell in this forty-thousand square foot building resting on the corner
of Otis and Mission Street. A neon green sign welcomes people passing by. The rooms
are plentiful and exude an artistic theme of vibrant colors visible through the
dim fluorescent lighting. The Egyptian, Gothic, and Medieval-inspired rooms are
just a few of the options for partners there to engage in erogenous fantasies. The
room in the center of the building is called the Mixed Club, welcoming heterosexuals,
lesbians, gays, bisexuals, and transgender men and women. If the door to one of
the many rooms is open, a couple or sex partners are inviting others in. If the
door is closed, the room is off limits, but voyeurs are still welcome to watch.
A stroll through the labyrinthine hallways of this club offers a deluge of sights
for the sex-crazed or curious, including everything from screens displaying pornographic

California Supreme Court eyes polygamy

In it's recent 4 to 3 ruling that the ban on gay marriage was a violation of the California Constitution (gay marriage foes intend to place a measure on the ballot to alter the state's constitution this November), the court considered how this ruling might affect those who in the future wanted to enter into polygamous (or, btw, incestuous) marriages. Indeed, Justice Baxter, in his dissent, cited precisely these concerns as one of the reasons he was voting to uphold the ban. In their own way, his words hold out hope for us poly folk.

Sayeth Justice Baxter: The bans on incestuous and polygamous marriages are ancient and deep-rooted, and, as the majority suggests, they are supported by strong considerations of social policy. Our society abhors such relationships, and the notion that our laws could not forever prohibit them seems preposterous. Yet here, the majority overturns, in abrupt fashion, an initiative statute confirming the equally deep-rooted assumption that marriage is a union of partners of the opposite sex. The majority does so by relying on its own assessment of contemporary community values, and by inserting in our Constitution an expanded definition of the right to marry that contravenes express statutory law.

That approach creates the opportunity for further judicial extension of this perceived constitutional right into dangerous territory. Who can say that, in ten, fifteen, or twenty years, an activist court might not rely on the majority’s analysis to conclude, on the basis of a perceived evolution in community values, that the laws prohibiting polygamous and incestuous marriages were no longer constitutionally justified?

For those who might not know, Akien and I run a private list for announcing our Poly Pool Parties (PPPs) and other poly-related events that we host here and/or are involved in putting on, mostly. In general these events are local to the SF Bay Area, but sometimes we announce things that we're doing elsewhere in the country. It's a very occasional and relatively low-traffic list.

We've been experiencing difficulties with our Weirdness Events e-mail list again. To deal with this, and to get out of the business of hosting our own server, Akien has created a new group on GoogleGroups, which will be replacing the old Weirdness Events list. People who were on the old list have been sent a message. If you were on the list before, in theory you should have gotten it already. But whether or not you were on the old list, or got that message, you are welcome to join the list now:

How many is too many?

If you knew your play partner was not monogamous, and sexually exclusive with you, and later after you had played for a while found out she has four to five sexual partners on an average month and that they aren't necessarily the same ones from month to month what would your reaction be?

Should the number as well as the fact that is not monogamous be disclosed up front?

Is it my fault for not asking for a number, and if so, how much do I ask? Names, dates, sexual positions?

Would it matter if they were male or female for safety's sake? If she said she gets tested regularly, and that she uses condoms with them, but because of her past history with you you didn't have to use them with her (since you are already fluid bonded), how safe would you feel or not feel to continue having unprotected sex with her? How safe would you feel having protected sex with her?

If she says she doesn't have a primary partner, and is thus not poly and doesn't need to negotiate compromises (calls it "dating" instead), how would that strike you?

Edges Needs Your Help

Over the last two decades many public play spaces have flourished and died in the bay area. Edges was built with love in the tradition of the best of these. Now we face a crossroads. The building we occupy is for sale. Ali and Alex are not able to secure a loan to buy it themselves, and unless someone steps up to purchase it from within the community it will be sold to outsiders. IT IS possible the new owners would let us stay, but at this time we have no commitment. As a community, we not only want, but need the support of Each Of You to see this through.

If you know of anyone in a position and with the inclination to buy the building and continue to rent it to Edges, please have them call Alex immediately. In the interim here is the current plan:

In order to continue providing a space to the community, (at this physical location or another) Edges needs financial support from our greater community. Ali has maintained Edges with NO debt for the past two years, yet neither Ali nor Alex take funds from their endeavors with Edges, but rather put all excess back into the space itself. We need the community to take on this same go-give mentality.

Unfortunately Ali is in school full time, just started a new job and is about to begin her internship for her laboratory career; she simply does not have the time to manage this extra workload! Therefore, we are looking for volunteers to manage fundraising events in the next few weeks. We need a General Manager of Fundraising, and people to organize specific events, organize the membership drive, advertise and spread the word, and more!

Please call Alex directly with any ideas or your willingness to take on some of what needs to be done.

New whip class in town! Starts in SF on March 6th...

Years past, there was a very well-known whips class that went on weekly at the Circus Center in San Francisco. For various reasons, the class eventually ended.

I'm quite pleased to be able to announce that a new version of the whips class is starting up again this coming March 6th. I'll be running it as a peer workshop rather than a class, although I'll be asking various people with good whips skills to come by from time to time. It will be held on the first and the third Thursdays of each month, in the same location as the old one, at 755 Frederick in SF (at Golden Gate Park, and by the Haight-Ashbury district.)

This will be a general-purpose whips workshop, not something solely intended at dungeon play techniques. Dungeon whips are welcome, as are long bullwhips. One of the charms of using this space is that it's in a gym environment, which means even a 14 foot bullwhip won't get tangled in the ceiling. However, since the space is vanilla, we won't be emphasizing any particular end-use for the skills we're practicing...

My partner Jen and I will be presenting a long practical nonmonogamy workshop on March 2nd. We have both been poly or nonmonogamous for quite some time (10 years for her, most of my life for me) and have also spent a lot of time in the poly community.

The presentation is meant to be an in-depth exploration of the how-to of nonmonogamy. We take a particularly pragmatic view: we try to go over the good and the bad of it all. For this workshop, we stay away from the heavy ideology and instead focus in on the day-to-day challenges of being polyamorous or otherwise nonmonogamous.

We've given a shorter (2 hour) version of this workshop three times now, and we received a lot of positive feedback each time. At the suggestion of some of the participants, we are holding a one-time 6-hour event, which should give us the time we need to actually cover a wide range of subjects around nonmonogamy.

Some subjects we intend to cover:

Big-picture nonmonogamy stuff: how to put oneself in a better situation, common mistakes, etc.

Types of nonmonogamy

Various reasons people do nonmonogamy

Negotiating relationship boundaries around nonmonogamy

General skills for negotiating on hard topics, including some in-workshop exercises

Handling jealousy

Nurturing new, secondary-style, play buddy, or otherwise less-involved relationships

Common pitfalls

While this event is held in a BDSM venue and will use examples from the BDSM community, almost everything we discuss will apply equally well to non-kinky relationships.

There will also be a good level of audience participation, from audience examples to small group discussions.

Everyone will get a good deal of information out of this workshop, whether they are new to the idea of nonmonogamy or have been poly for many years.

Are we men a bunch of lying pricks?

Some years ago, I was at a private play party being held in a large house that had a number of private rooms. A woman I knew somewhat approached me for a scene. She really liked being tied up with rope so that she couldn't get loose but had a hard time finding men whose skills were good enough to prevent that. She had heard about my special interest in rope bondage. We talked beforehand about what the scene would and wouldn't involve. (Me and my negotiation fetish, don'tcha know?) One of the things she *wasn't* interested in was that the play be sexual. Given that "sexual" is a somewhat vague term, I proceeded to ask her if several different acts would or would not be OK. All of them were not. OK. Candidly, I don't much like doing nonsexual scenes but I figured what the hey. I find her attractive, we seem to have a certain rapport, the scene will probably be "adequately" fun anyway, and who knows what the future might bring, right? So we do the scene, and it's actually not half bad. (For a non-sexual scene, anyway.) Oh, and no, she couldn't get loose. <G>

So the scene is finished and she's getting dressed when I hear her quietly say, almost more to herself than me, "You actually kept the agreement to not be sexual. That was interesting."

Huh?

I turn to look at her, my jaw hanging open.

"What do you mean?" I ask her.

"You're the first one who ever did that," she replies.

HUH???

"Yeah," she continues, "All of the other men have just gone ahead and had sex with me anyway."

I cannot believe what I'm hearing.

"What do they say afterwards?"

"Usually something like, Oh, it just happened."

I just stare at her, stunned into speechlessness. Then it dawns on me that she was likely thinking that I would break the agreement as well. She went into the scene anticipating that that would happen. All throughout the scene a part of her brain was waiting for that to "just happen." She was expecting that I would break my word. A part of me starts to become really angry at her that she would think that of me, but I decide to not say anything. After all, I had kept my agreements. We finish up and rejoin the party.

I get to thinking about her prior experiences. That's not OK. It didn't "just happen." A blue car driving by on the street outside the house "just happened." A cloud drifting overhead "just happened." A man intentionally engaging in sexual behavior after he has explicitly promised to not do that is *not* something that "just happened." No, that assertion just plain doesn't fly.

Over the next several months, we go on to have several more private play dates of a similar nature, although as she gets to know me better certain things that were previously not OK now become OK. I love happy endings.

So a short while ago, at a small dinner with some local kinksters, I tell this story and one woman at the table replies, "What's your point?" When she sees that I'm kind of staring at her she continues, "That's more the norm than the exception." The other woman at the table looks at me and ruefully nods agreement.

It gets me to thinking, when Greenery Press was considering publishing "The Kinky Girl's Guide to Dating" I was one of the pre-publication manuscript readers. After I had read the manuscript, I called the publisher and said, "Are you sure you want to publish this? It's basically one long catalog of horror stories about what jerks the local male doms are. An awful lot of these stories are about men lying to get sex, lying about their other relationships, and lying about other important things. If I was a local submissive woman I'd feel like running screaming in the opposite direction. No way I'd want to get involved with these guys."

What particularly bothered me about the manuscript was that the author wasn't talking about newbie men. She was talking about established, well-known guys. Guys seen at places like local munches with some frequency. Guys (supposedly!) well educated about basic SM principles such as consent, respecting limits, and so forth. Guys who *knew better* than to pull crap like that. This bothered me, rather a lot, particularly the implications.

So what I basically have here is at least three women, all of whom seem fairly rational and emotionally stable with no anti-male axe to grind, and all of whom are separately affirming that being lied to by men -- in particular, being lied to by local, known, supposedly educated men -- in order to get sex/play/etc. is a *common* experience for them. In particular, incidents involving men lying or breaking agreements in order to "get" sex and/or to avoid using condoms seem to be extremely common. (In "The Kinky Girl's Guide" manuscript the author recounts an incident in which she wakes up to find her dom fucking her. She's not too drowsy to discover that he's not wearing a condom, which is a direct violation of their safer sex agreements. He was apparently hoping that she'd be too sleepy to notice. When she angrily asks him why he did this, his only reply is a hangdog facial expression. Their relationship ends soon thereafter.)

In my travels across the country, women in other locales have affirmed the basic truth of this. We men are notorious for outright lying (about really important things) to women in order to get play, to get sex, and/or to avoid using condoms.

My God, is the situation really *that* bad?

** In February we are going to start an all-ages coffeehouse social on the 1st Wednesday, with a similar format. The first one will be Feb. 6th. **

Jen, Pepper, and whomever they can pull in will be chatting, socializing, and generally getting up to wacky hijinks at the Muddy Waters coffeehouse next Monday. This is not a discussion or activism group, but rather just a regular social gathering - we will repeat this event the 3rd Monday of every month. We welcome poly and nonmonogamous people (new, curious, or experienced) under 40 years of age. Feel free to arrive late or just stop by briefly.

We will probably be in the back area of Muddy Waters - go around the counter to find us. Our table will have a bondage teddy bear on it. There may not be seating for everyone if a large crowd shows, but we'll prioritize those who need it more. We ask that people buy something small at Muddy, if you have the funds, so they don't kick us out.

Some of us will be going out to dinner afterwards, at a place to be negotiated while at the coffeehouse. You are welcome to show at the coffeehouse at any point between 6 and 7:30 pm. If you arrive later and wish to join us for dinner, call Pepper at 415 305 8766.

After dinner, there may be an outing to the Death Guild goth dance club (http://www.deathguild.com/) depending on interest.

To arrive by public transport, take the BART to the 16th St station in San Francisco, walk one block west along 16th to Valencia and take a left. To arrive by car, if you are having trouble parking, try the area at Mission and 14th or 15th. Do not leave anything valuable and visible in your car. Do not park in the center turn lane of Valencia - you will likely be ticketed.

The next under-40 coffeehouse social will be Feb 18th, which is also President's day. It will be happening right after TNG Con 4 (www.tngcon.org), which the kinky and under-35 among you should take a look at.

Apologies to the 40-and-over crowd. We are holding an age-limited event because the under-40 crowd has been unable to establish a strong presence at any of the current poly social venues in the area. Also, check out the all-ages version of this event that happens on the 1st Monday of each month.

I got a little lost and ended up in this tribe (easily disoriented--up all night). So then I got to thinking, "what's the difference between poly and swinging?" Does swinging just refer to older terminology for the same thing? So is it perhaps the progenitor to poly; or are they two separate things entirely? Poly seems a bit more politicized but is there more to it?
